In a recent stroke of luck, the West Virginia Lottery struck gold as Powerball ticket sales skyrocketed alongside the record-breaking grand prize of $2.04 billion in November.
The West Virginia Lottery collected nearly $8.5 million as sales in the Mountain State mirrored the nationwide Powerball frenzy leading up to the draw.
On November 30, John Myers, the director of West Virginia Lottery, provided a report to the Lottery Commission regarding Powerball sales. The reported total was approximately $5.8 million, which was around ten times higher than the usual weekly revenue generated by the Lottery, as stated by Myers.
However, that number only represented Powerball tickets that were sold from October 30 to November 5. The reports for Powerball ticket sales on November 6 and 7 were still being processed at the time of the Commission meeting.
According to a Lottery spokesperson, Play West Virginia saw a $2.65 million increase in sales numbers after factoring in those days. Myers acknowledged that the substantial jackpot had an evident impact.
More West Virginia Lottery winning numbers
According to Myers’ report, the Lottery has been consistently winning since the beginning of fiscal year 2025. In the first four months of FY23, which includes October, the Lottery’s revenues have increased by 2% compared to the same period last year.
The total revenue achieved is currently at $436.6 million.
In addition, Myers informed the Commission that the Lottery’s sports betting revenue has remained consistent. Nevertheless, he conceded that the actual figures have fallen slightly short of the initial expectations set by the Lottery.
However, he emphasized that the Lottery has consistently met projections for most years, excluding the initial year. Additionally, in October, sports betting generated an even higher revenue of $500,000, surpassing the Lottery’s expectations.

According to an economics professor at the College of the Holy Cross, the increase in the number of combinations added in 2015 has significantly raised the chances of winning a jackpot, implying that it is a deliberate result of lottery design.
The probability of winning the Nov. 7 jackpot was 1 in 292.2 million.
Furthermore, selecting the annuity option while interest rates are high during drawing times enhances the value of prizes for winners. Moreover, the Multistate Lottery Association, responsible for overseeing Powerball, has shifted its focus towards allocating a larger portion of its revenue towards jackpots rather than smaller prizes.
