West Virginia witnessed a significant surge in online sports betting, increasing by one-third, after five months of only two of the country’s top sports betting apps being available in the state.
With the debut of its popular mobile sports betting app, BetMGM WV Sportsbook joins the ranks as the third online sportsbook in West Virginia. Operating under The Greenbrier license, it becomes the second online sportsbook to do so.
After successfully launching in New Jersey, BetMGM expands its online sports betting app to West Virginia, making it the second betting market for the company. Furthermore, the app is set to be introduced in Nevada in the near future.
Naturally, the timing of BetMGM’s launch is impeccable.
It is wise to launch before the most popular sporting event of the year. Betting on the Super Bowl LIV is highly likely to generate an impressive amount of online wagers in the Mountain State and throughout the country.

Online sports betting in West Virginia
While BetMGM may be launching sportsbooks at a slower pace compared to DraftKings and FanDuel, it quickly established partnerships with major sports leagues, including:
- NBA
- MLB
- NHL
As we approach the big game, it’s worth mentioning that it proudly receives official data from the NFL. That’s quite a reputable affiliation to have.
BetMGM’s partnership with Yahoo Sports and its strong brand recognition will be instrumental in increasing the market share of the sports betting app in West Virginia, especially during the Super Bowl and March Madness betting frenzy that currently dominates our online feeds.
It can be challenging to attract customers when the nation’s top two betting apps, DraftKings and FanDuel, have already been in operation for several months.
In comparison to New Jersey, online betting growth in the Mountain State has been relatively slower. In fact, there have been only a few instances where the online sports betting handle has exceeded the retail handle.
In December, online betting in New Jersey represented 88% of all bets, whereas in West Virginia, online betting accounted for approximately 46% of the total.
The slower growth of online betting in West Virginia compared to other states can be attributed to several factors, but primarily it boils down to the inadequate marketing efforts by the online sportsbooks.
If BetMGM invests in marketing efforts within the state, it will likely secure a larger portion of the market and contribute to the overall growth of the industry.
More good news for West Virginia sports betting
But wait, there’s more.
The betting windows at Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras sportsbooks were opened shortly after the launch of BetMGM, with West Virginia Lottery Director John Myers expressing optimism that sports betting could resume in those locations “very, very soon.”
Mardi Gras and Wheeling have finally resumed accepting bets after an 11-month hiatus, perfectly timed to take advantage of the Super Bowl betting craze.
IGT has partnered with Delaware North, the operator of Mardi Gras and Wheeling Island, to handle their sports betting operations.
The books in both West Virginia casinos have undergone a transformation, now featuring a fresh appearance and a new brand identity called betly.
In a press release, Kim Florence, the President and General Manager of Wheeling Island Hotel Casino Racetrack, expressed her thoughts on the long-awaited news that bettors in the region have been eagerly anticipating for almost a year.
“We are thrilled to announce the reopening of our sportsbooks in both West Virginia casinos. We eagerly anticipate the return of our esteemed guests, ensuring them unrivaled and dependable sports betting experiences.”
Both sportsbooks will offer both betly kiosks and traditional teller windows for placing bets. However, wagers exceeding $1,000 must be placed at the teller window.
Brian Knost from Mardi Gras Casino expressed that they have dedicated numerous months of hard work to create an exhilarating opportunity for their patrons to engage in placing bets on their beloved sporting events, as stated to MetroNews.
“The kiosks streamline the process, reducing wait times at the window,” Knost explained. “Guests can conveniently approach the kiosks to place their bets and receive a voucher. If they happen to win on that specific bet, they can simply take the voucher to the cage and redeem their winnings.”
Naturally, the next question that arises is regarding the release date of the mobile sports betting app for the two books. As anticipated, Knost hinted that it would be happening “in the near future.”
