Sports betting operations have been suddenly suspended in two West Virginia casinos, due to unforeseen circumstances.
Delaware North has made the decision to immediately halt all retail and online sportsbook operations at Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras Casino in West Virginia.
According to a Delaware North spokesperson’s statement to Legal Sports Report,
Miomni Gaming, our provider of sports wagering platform in West Virginia, has informed us about a contract dispute they are facing with a third-party technology supplier. Consequently, the Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras sports betting operations, along with the BetLucky.com mobile app, are temporarily unable to accept new sports wagers.
Delaware North has not provided a specific timeline for when operations will resume, but they have assured that they will honor and redeem all bets that have been placed.
Market consequences
At present, the sole online sports betting option in West Virginia is the BetLucky app. The inclusion of online and mobile wagering has demonstrated its significance in propelling the market forward.
In January, New Jersey demonstrated remarkable success, with mobile/online sportsbooks contributing nearly 80 percent or $304.9 million of the total handle.
In the coming months, several other online brands such as DraftKings, FanDuel, and William Hill are anticipated to join the online market in West Virginia.

The Mountain State was quick to embrace sports betting legislation, joining several other states in seizing the opportunity presented by the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the federal ban.

After the Senate’s approval of H 2934, it now awaits the House’s concurrence with minor amendments before being sent to Gov. Jim Justice for final approval. If all goes as anticipated, West Virginia would join the ranks of the fifth US state to legalize online poker and casino gambling.
