FanDuel, the daily fantasy sports and sports betting operator, has recently launched its sportsbook at The Casino Club in Greenbrier Resort. This exclusive casino is the only private one in America and now offers sports betting services. The sportsbook officially opened on September 13th, making it the second facility in West Virginia to provide this service.
Similar to many other amenities at The Greenbrier, the FanDuel Sportsbook prioritizes a sense of intimacy and exclusivity. Despite having 21 television screens adorning the walls, the space itself is more compact compared to typical sportsbook operations.
In reality, it bears a striking resemblance to a sitting room or lounge found in an extravagant mansion. The walls are beautifully adorned with maroon fabric, exuding an air of elegance. The chairs themselves are wide-backed, reminiscent of cozy easy chairs that would typically be found in a luxurious home theater.
As usual, we don’t really know much about what’s happening at the Greenbrier
The Casino Club at Greenbrier exudes an irresistible sense of intrigue, adding to its magnetic appeal. This luxurious resort proudly stands as one of the few remaining strongholds of authentic high society in the entire country.
There is a certain charm in the luxuriousness of a resort that is privately owned by the governor of the state. In order to maintain this atmosphere, as well as adhere to legal requirements, only individuals who are hotel guests, club members, or residents of the property are permitted to access the casino.
Therefore, the property does not feel obligated to share excessive information regarding its activities, making the announcement somewhat unexpected.
On the other hand, the resort in White Sulphur Springs became the top contender to launch a sportsbook due to additional information that had gradually surfaced. The Greenbrier had successfully formed a partnership with FanDuel, which had also obtained its permit to run a sportsbook in the state.
It was inevitable. Despite its exclusive nature, the Greenbrier occasionally requires individuals to rent hotel rooms.
Where do things stand in West Virginia?
Currently, West Virginia boasts the presence of two fully functional sportsbooks. Hollywood Casino Charles Town commenced accepting wagers on August 30th and commemorated its official inauguration merely two days thereafter.
The Charles Town property has achieved remarkable outcomes thus far. Within its initial four days of functioning, the sportsbook successfully received wagers amounting to $640,000. Out of this sum, the casino achieved an impressive hold percentage of approximately 50 percent, surpassing hold percentages observed in more established markets such as Nevada.
Mardi Gras and Wheeling Island
Preparations are underway for sports betting at both Mardi Gras Casino in Cross Lanes and Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack in West Virginia, indicating positive progress. The remaining three casinos in the state are also in different stages of preparation.
Both properties, which are owned by gaming operator Delaware North, obtained their licenses to operate a sportsbook in August 2018.
Since July, a section of Mardi Gras’ casino has been undergoing construction. It won’t be long before their sports betting facility makes its much-anticipated debut.
Similarly, Wheeling Island has recently introduced a sports bar right in the heart of its gaming area, marking the first step towards the eventual launch of their sportsbook, as confirmed by the management.
Mountaineer
The Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort is currently the only casino that is gradually progressing towards opening a book. However, as of now, the property located in the northern part of the state has not obtained its license to commence operations.
Nevertheless, in September, the parent company of the Mountaineer, Eldorado Resorts, forged a partnership with renowned sports betting giant William Hill. Almost concurrently, another property recently acquired by Eldorado, Tropicana Atlantic City, also finalized an agreement with William Hill.
With the addition of a sportsbook company, things may finally progress swiftly at the Mountaineer. Currently, gambling enthusiasts in West Virginia will have to settle for the two available sportsbooks in the state.
