December was yet another victorious month for sports betting in the Mountain State. West Virginia sportsbooks witnessed an increase of approximately $5 million in bets, accumulating a total of over $53 million.

In West Virginia, approximately 62% of the total amount received by online sports betting apps reached nearly $33 million within a month.

The Greenbrier took the lead in online wagers with a combination of FanDuel Sportsbook and BetMGM Sportsbook WV, amassing close to $19 million in handle.

The DraftKings Sportsbook at Hollywood Casino had a successful performance with a total of more than $12 million in bets placed in December.

In addition, West Virginia sportsbooks garnered substantial revenue for the month, surpassing $4.7 million to conclude the year.

In December, the betting amount surged to $53 million, marking a rise of approximately 10% compared to the previous month of November.

Even though it did not place the riskiest bets, Hollywood Casino outperformed all other competitors for the month by generating a total handle of $26 million over a four-week period.

Hollywood’s physical book sales outperformed its online platform for the third month in a row, bringing in slightly over $13.4 million, which is around $700,000 higher than the amount accepted by DraftKings Sportsbook WV.

With approximately $20 million, the Greenbrier secured the second spot in handle. Due to its private retail location, the resort primarily conducts its betting activities online.

The online sportsbooks accounted for approximately 92% of the total amount wagered, which amounted to nearly $19 million.

Mountaineer Casino secured the third spot in terms of revenue, earning slightly over $5 million for the month. Although the online app, William Hill Sportsbook, generated around $1.1 million in handle, the physical retail location of Mountaineer Casino was the primary contributor to this success.

Nearly $4 million in bets were attributed to it.

Mardi Gras Casino and Wheeling Island ranked at the bottom among the active sportsbooks in the state, generating approximately $900,000 and $830,000 in revenue, respectively.

The Betly online sportsbook provided assistance to both locations, resulting in $165,000 in online bets for Mardi Gras and approximately $70,000 for Wheeling’s app.

WV sports betting revenue

In December, sportsbooks in WV achieved earnings surpassing $1 million in three out of four weeks, resulting in a total revenue of over $4.7 million. This marked an 8% growth compared to the previous month of November.

During the month, Hollywood Casino emerged as the top-profit generating sportsbook in the state, accumulating over $2.3 million in earnings.

Just like the handle breakdown, Hollywood’s retail sportsbook generated higher revenue compared to DraftKings’. The land-based book accounted for nearly $1.5 million, while the online app contributed approximately $850,000 in revenue.

With a revenue of just over $1.5 million, The Greenbrier secured the second position. FanDuel and BetMGM contributed nearly $1.4 million to the overall amount.

In December, Mountaineer Casino secured the third position, accumulating approximately $560,000 in earnings. Despite a total revenue of over $415,000 from its retail sportsbook, the casino experienced a loss exceeding $160,000 during the week of Dec. 26.

The William Hill app used by mountaineers generated close to $145,000 in revenue for the month.

Although Wheeling Island received fewer wagers, it outperformed Mardi Gras Casino in terms of revenue.

Last month, Wheeling Island’s earnings amounted to approximately $220,000, whereas its sister property generated $130,000.

Wheeling received approximately $14,000 and Mardi Gras acquired $36,000 through the Betly platform.
