West Virginia sports betting has reached its lowest point since the state first legalized gambling. Following the lowest overall handle since October 2018, WV sportsbooks experienced a further decline for the week ending May 11.
Despite only a modest decrease, the total handle saw a decline of approximately $85,000. The betting market in WV has been lacking positive developments for quite a while.
The revenue for this week experienced a downturn as well. Following a profitable outcome of over $400,000 last week, the sportsbooks encountered a loss for the second time in a span of three weeks.
The casinos and sportsbooks are unfortunate as the situation seems unlikely to change until online sports betting becomes available again in the Mountain State. It has been over two months since WV residents had the opportunity to place sports wagers through an app.
Assistance is on its way, however, the major uncertainty persists regarding the exact timeline for the launch of new online sportsbooks in WV. The three entities anticipated to unveil their platforms are:
It might seem repetitive, but it’s evident that WV sports betting will only flourish like other markets when online wagering becomes available.
The report for this week encompasses the activity of all five WV sportsbooks from May 5-11.

A Closer Look At WV Sports Betting Handle
The betting activity in WV remains underwhelming as the state currently has only three physical sportsbooks. It appears that the figures will continue to decline every week until online sportsbooks make a comeback.
That being stated, Hollywood Casino is the sole sportsbook that is performing well. Despite its handle of just over $1.6 million not being incredibly impressive, it is a slight improvement from last week and significantly higher than any other sportsbook, surpassing them by more than three times.
Mountaineer Casino secured the second position with approximately $540,000, experiencing a decrease of around $100,000 in its handle compared to the previous week. This marks several consecutive weeks where its handle has remained consistent at a similar level.
The Greenbrier’s handle has remained stagnant, even though it saw a modest increase of nearly $10,000, reaching only about $42,000 for this week.
Without an online option, all three land-based sportsbooks will continue to face difficulties. Due to West Virginia’s predominantly rural nature, the state has demonstrated that gamblers are unlikely to travel long distances solely to place casual bets.
If a new mobile betting app is not released, it is likely that the handle will continue to be disappointing.
These are the rankings for the weekly handle of the WV sportsbooks.
- The Hollywood Casino has a total value of $1,631,646.73, while the Mountaineer Casino is valued at $536,437.16. The Greenbrier has a value of $42,301.50. However, both the Mardi Gras Casino and Wheeling Island currently have no value.
A Closer Look At WV Sports Betting Revenue
The revenue figures experienced a dreadful week as well. Despite generating over $400,000 in the previous report, the sportsbooks faced a negative outcome this week.
Hollywood Casino once again took the lead, but its earnings were only approximately $25,000. Regrettably, there was a significant decline compared to the previous week, where it generated over $245,000.
The Greenbrier remains the sole casino to generate profit this week, consistently earning approximately $4,000 for the third consecutive week.
Out of all the casinos, Mountaineer Casino experienced the most substantial decline. After generating over $150,000 in profits last week, it incurred a loss of nearly $40,000.
The Mardi Gras Casino seems to be busy resolving bets as it has reported zero revenue, while Wheeling Island paid out approximately $250.
When the betting handle decreases significantly, sportsbooks are at a higher risk of experiencing negative revenue. Given that two out of the last three weeks have resulted in losses, it is possible that this could be an indication of more challenging times ahead.
These are the rankings for weekly revenue among the WV sportsbooks.
- Hollywood Casino ($25,052.98)
- The Greenbrier ($3,383.00)
- Mardi Gras Casino ($0)
- Wheeling Island ($-261.80)
- Mountaineer Casino ($-38,982.10)
