Sportsbooks in West Virginia are experiencing substantial growth alongside the increasing number of states embracing sports betting. These states have now surpassed the betting revenues of Nevada, which is considered the mecca of sports betting.

For the first time ever, the American Gaming Association (AGA) reported that the amount of sports bets placed in new sports betting states in January surpassed the wagers made in Nevada.

According to a recent report by AGA, other states that have legalized sports betting have successfully attracted American bettors. In fact, sports betting outside of Nevada made up 50.2 percent of all legal wagers, which amounted to a total of $503.1 million.

In a press release, Sara Slane, the Senior Vice President of Public Affairs at AGA, shared her thoughts on the news.

In a historic shift, the rest of the United States has surpassed Nevada in sports betting for the first time. This clearly indicates a high demand for legal sports betting, with most wagers now taking place in recently established markets. Furthermore, state legislatures and tribal nations are actively responding to this strong consumer appetite by legalizing sports betting. Remarkably, two-thirds of jurisdictions have already taken measures to legalize this sector, showcasing an exceptional growth within just ten months.

Sports betting nearing $1 billion in wagers

After the Supreme Court’s decision to repeal the nationwide prohibition on sports betting outside Nevada in May 2018, six additional states have legalized certain types of sports betting. Moreover, several other states are considering introducing similar legislation or have displayed indications of heading in that direction.

In January, Nevada accumulated a total wagered amount of $497.5 million, whereas New Jersey surpassed the other states with a handle of $385.3 million. Altogether, the total wagered among all states for January fell just short of $1 billion, reaching $998.8 million.

With $17.8 million in handle, West Virginia ranks sixth in sports betting for the month. Although its figures pale in comparison to New Jersey’s, West Virginia’s position at the forefront of the national sports betting movement grants it a seat at the table.

Take a glance at the totals from every state:

  • Nevada – $497.5 million
  • The amount of $385.3 million is allocated to New Jersey.
  • Mississippi – $35.2 million
  • Pennsylvania – $32.0 million
  • The state of Rhode Island has a budget of $19.1 million.
  • The state of West Virginia has accumulated a total of $17.8 million.
  • Delaware – $11.9 million

In the state, March Madness presents an intriguing scenario for bettors this month. However, it cannot be taken for granted due to the inconsistencies observed in the wagered amounts each month thus far.

Sporting Setback

There is definitely ample potential for expansion in the West Virginia sports betting market. Currently, the sole options available for placing bets are limited to the state’s five casinos.

  • The establishment known as Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races.
  • Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort is the name of the establishment.
  • The Greenbrier is home to the prestigious Casino Club.
  • Mardi Gras Casino and Resort
  • Wheeling Island Hotel

Up to now, BetLucky Sportsbook is the sole online platform operating within the state, despite the legality of mobile wagering.

Recently, there has been a significant change as the app, along with live sports betting at the Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras casinos, stopped accepting sports bets. These establishments are under the management of Delaware North, and BetLucky is a collaboration between Delaware North and Miomni Gaming.

The company made an attempt to reassure its customers that the closure is only temporary. Nevertheless, with the country gearing up for March Madness frenzy, each passing day without sports betting available at the company’s books diminishes the possibility of a speedy resolution. Furthermore, even if they manage to resume operations online soon, regaining customer trust might prove to be challenging.

Upon glancing at the AGA state totals, it becomes evident that there have been some challenges in the market thus far. Rhode Island, despite having a population approximately one-third smaller than West Virginia, managed to generate $1.3 million more in wagers compared to the Mountain State. It is worth noting that Rhode Island only permits legalized sports betting at two casinos.

Room for Growth

Despite the setback experienced by Delaware North, the AGA report highlights the promising prospects in West Virginia. Several states have made significant monthly progress in betting activities since 2018.

The West Virginia gambling market has a significant growth potential due to the availability of mobile sports betting and the potential for additional legalized online gaming.

Although BetLucky app wagering has been relatively small compared to the total wagering in the state, it is highly likely that the introduction of DraftKings WV Sportsbook, along with the presence of FanDuel and William Hill operating live sportsbooks, will result in an increase in the availability of mobile offerings.

By providing additional mobile opportunities, it is likely to appeal to a larger pool of bettors.

Recently, the West Virginia House and Senate passed a bill that permits West Virginia casinos to introduce legalized online poker and various other online casino games.

If Republican Gov. Jim Justice signs the bill, it will pave the way for increased online wagering within the state. The availability of more online betting options will bring positive developments for WV sports betting. Undoubtedly, the legalization of online casino gambling will also have a beneficial impact on mobile sports betting.

In recent times, West Virginia has emerged as a leader in the surge of sports betting throughout the United States. It will be fascinating to witness how this translates into the realm of live sportsbooks and online sports betting in the upcoming months.
